Japan's doing it too!
And that is a headline worthy because the iPad is not made in Japan. This is a country that is used to being ahead of everyone else’s technology. They are one of the few countries to be using some of the most advanced technologies available to man kind at the moment and more often than not it is their own doing. So when a device from across the planet comes in and takes over the market, it is an intriguing situations indeed.
The iPad has cause the Japanese market to go into a rush of adrenalin around the product. Reports have been pouring in about roughly half the Japanese business and technology magazines featuring the iPad on their covers. All of them are surely featuring the device somewhere or the other. The Japanese have been queueing up outside the local Apple stores to make sure that they get their hands on one on the day of the release. And all of this has casued deep furrows to appear on the foreheads of all the Japanese tech companies.
The Japanese people are used to using devices developed and made within the country. That is mainly because their needs as a market are very different from the rest of the world. The kinds of technologies that they use on a daily basis is quite uncommon in most parts of the world. This fact also makes it harder for companies outside Japan to make devices that compete with what built within the country. But that has not been the case for some of the products imported from the outside.
No one expected the iPhone to be popular in Japan because of their legendarily complex phones and all the things that they accomplish through the phone (like shopping, paying utility bills, buying tickets etc.). But regardless of those things, the iPhone really did take off in the country. And now it is iPad’s turn to steal the show.
Apple’s products are apparently seen in a different light in Japan (just like the rest of the world). They seem to out do their local competition mainly by so very aesthetically appealing and totally innovative. Japan’s devices are extremely utilitarian in general and do not focus that much on the aesthetics. There are of course exceptions to this but the over all focus has shifted to upgrading instead of innovating in Japanese companies in the recent years.
Daisuke Wakabayashi, writer for the WSJ, tells us that in recent times, cheap competition from outside the country has forced the companies to focus more on their existing devices instead of trying to innovate something new. Companies like Apple, Amazon (with their Kindle) and Samsung (from nearby country South Korea) have been invading the Japanese market with cheap and affordable devices which are also well designed and fully-featured. Except may be the Kindle — I wouldn’t call that fully featured anymore.
He also mentions that the Japanese too are susceptible to the pleasure of owning a brand-name device like Apple. They are instant hits with the college crowd and have this certain show off factor that is hard to resist for some. And it also build a kind of peer-pressure once it has entered the circle through an early adopter or two.
The reports from Japan mention that people were standing in line days in advance of the release, showing an enthusiasm that is similar to what is seen in the US and some parts of Europe. In fact, we have often seen reports of people literally camping in front of the Apple shops coming out of the US, which is amazing for any company.
Not that we have seen any other company commanding this kind of mass following. No wonder Mac followers are seen as being a bit cult-like. They spread the word, they convert people and once you start following, there is usually no turning back.
